John Fusco quit high school when he was 16 to play blues music and work in factories in the south of the United States. In his early 20s, he went back to night school and got his GED. He then applied to NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts and was accepted. At Tisch, Waldo Salt and Ring Lardner Jr. taught him how to write for the big screen. His first two student screenplays won the national Nissan-Focus Award two years in a row. In 1986, Walter Hill directed Crossroads, which was based on his experience travelling with a blues band.
