John Fusco quit high school when he was 16 to play blues music and work in factories in the south of the United States. In his early 20s, he went back to night school and got his GED. He then applied to NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts and was accepted. At Tisch, Waldo Salt and Ring Lardner Jr. taught him how to write for the big screen. His first two student screenplays won the national Nissan-Focus Award two years in a row. In 1986, Walter Hill directed Crossroads, which was based on his experience travelling with a blues band. Crossroads, a movie from 1986 that is now a cult favourite, was the inspiration for the music video game Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock (2007). Young Guns was a huge hit at the box office in 1988, and its sequel, Young Guns II, was just as popular (1990). His research on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation led to the controversial 1992 book Thunderheart, which was praised for exposing federal abuses in Native American communities today. Fusco went on to write the ABC miniseries DreamKeeper (2003), which was about Native Americans, as well as the popular Disney epic Hidalgo (2004). In 2003, Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, his only animated script, was nominated for an Academy Award. The Netflix Original Series “Marco Polo” was made by Fusco and ran by him from 2014 to 2017. In 2017, he also turned “The Shack,” which did very well at the box office, into a movie. Fusco wrote the original screenplay for “The Highwaymen,” which stars Kevin Costner and Woody Harrelson and is directed by John Lee Hancock. The Netflix Original Film is set to come out in October 2018. Fusco is currently adapting the best-selling young adult book “Pax” for SKE, making a new drama series for History, and writing and producing a number of US-China co-productions under his Nomad production banner
